NHTSA Launches Safety App for iPhone

Friday, September 13, 2013

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently released an iPhone app that makes it easy for users to receive updates about vehicle recalls, learn about crash test safety ratings, and more. Just don’t use it while you’re driving!

The SaferCar app is available for free in the Apple App Store for iOS devices like the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A version for Android-based devices is currently in development.

The app gives users access to a wide range of safety topics from the NHTSA, which can also be accessed on the agency’s website, safercar.gov. Just a few of the safety steps users can take with the app include:

reading real-time safety information about vehicles, including crash test ratings and vehicle recall alerts, filing safety complaints with the NHTSA if they encounter a defect, including a scan of the vehicle’s VIN barcode, providing information on safe driving, such as instructions on how to install car seats and directions to the nearest child seat inspection station if drivers have questions about their child’s car seat safety.

The app also allows users to compare vehicle safety ratings across different makes and models, which the agency hopes will help drivers make informed choices when they are buying or renting vehicles as well as when they drive one.

Hidden defects in vehicles can and do cause car accidents, which can result in bone fractures and other injuries.
