Deer sightings are not uncommon in the Kansas City metropolitan area. One of the beauties of living in Kansas or Missouri is the abundance of wildlife in our vicinity. However these animals can be dangerous because they don’t know well enough to stay out of the way of cars and trucks and motorcycles and far too often these accidents can have devastating consequences. So, as beautiful as they are, Deer-Auto Collisions can be very, very dangerous.
In Lansing, Kansas last week, a 22 year-old driver was seriously injured in auto accident on Kansas Highway 5 when the driver attempted to avoid hitting a deer that wandered onto the road. The accident happened around 1:30 a.m. According to reports, the Lansing man swerved, went off the road, rolled over and hit a tree. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment for back and neck injuries.
Here are a few safe driving tips to help avoid a serious injury accident if and when you come across a deer on the road:
Heed the warning signs – deer crossing signs are posted to warn drivers of heavily populated deer areas. Take notice of these signs!Drive at a safe speed.Drive defensively.Keep an eye out – scan the roadway and surrounding areas for signs of deer.Be especially wary at sunset and sunrise.Drive carefully at night – use your high beams whenever possible to better illuminate the roads.Slow down if you see other cars behaving differently – they may have spotted a deer that you have yet to see.Expect the unexpected. At Roswold Law Group, our experienced Kansas City Auto Accident Attorneys know that trying to avoid these animals often leads to crashes with other vehicles, vehicle rollovers and other accidents that are frequently worse than hitting the deer. As scary as it sounds, its usually better to just hit the deer rather than try and avoid the collision. Let’s try to keep our Kansas and Missouri roadways safe!
