Everything is always bigger in Texas. At least that’s what they say but if the great state of Texas has it’s way, they’re about to become the fastest, too. The Texas Senate is scheduled to vote on whether or not to increase speed limits. If the legislation passes, some Texas highways will see an increase in speed limits to 85 m.p.h. Some highways are already traveling at 80 m.p.h.
Raising speed limits in Kansas and Missouri may lead to more serious injury accidents and fatalities.For the record, in Kansas and Missouri, the top speed limit on a highway maxes out at 70, which falls in line for most states in the U.S.
The idea of boosting the speed limits may be a reason for many commuters to celebrate, especially if you’re making the drive from Lawrence to Kansas City or coming in from Platte County. Being able to kick that needle up a few degrees on the odometer would help you to get to work and home faster. Besides, most people are speeding already, so why not make it legal?
Here is something that you may not be thinking of though. Higher speeds could and probably will dramatically increase the number of fatal injury accidents. Let’s say Kansas and Missouri join the speed coalition and boost the speed limit to 85. How many motorists are doing the math to realized they would have to hit the brakes at around 120 feet to come to a complete stop? That’s assuming your breaks are in tip top shape. They you have to worry about the guy behind you– and the guy behind him– and the truck driver behind him– and so on and so on.
