Motorcyclist Killed in Lakeview Crash

A motorcycle crash in Lakeview left a 31-year-old man dead on Thursday afternoon, adding to the already high number of recent Illinois motorcycle fatalities. The biker was reportedly on Inner Lake Shore Drive near the intersection with Grace Street on the north side of Chicago when he fell from his bike and was then struck by a car.

Officials have not specified the exact location of the crash other than that it occurred in the 3800 block near Grace, but it could be unclear since the intersection with Sheridan is mere feet to the north, which creates an elongated intersection in the area that serve three separate streets. The interchange can be confusing to drivers who are unfamiliar with the area and there have been crashes there in the past.

It is not yet known what caused the motorcyclist to fall off his bike or the car to hit the man and police have not yet said whether any drivers will be charged with crimes in this case.

Biking in Illinois is more popular than many realize. In fact, motorcycles account for about 4 percent of all registered vehicles in the state, meaning that one in 25 vehicles is a motorcycle. A fatal crash between a drunk driver and a motorcyclist last June has resulted in a 10 year prison sentence for the driver. The incident occurred last June in Naperville, Illinois and claimed the life of an innocent motorcyclist.

Not only was the at-fault driver under the influence of marijuana, he was also engaged in a road-rage incident that further caused him to driver recklessly and irresponsibly, making him a danger to himself and everyone on the road. The driver reportedly got into an argument with three teenagers in another car while stopped at a traffic light. He then attempted to chase down the teenagers and drove aggressively while doing so. As he was chasing the teens, the driver failed to exercise caution and collided with and killed a motorcyclist, who was a resident of Lombard and who died at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.

After the collision, the driver fled the scene but was later found by police officers who charged the man with aggravated driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident. The driver was found guilty of both charges in March and was just sentenced this week. In addition, he was also charged with aggravated reckless driving and misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana, obstructing an officer, and failing to yield while turning left.

This crash was preventable and did not need to happen. Unfortunately the driver in this case got behind the wheel when he was unfit to do so and he should never have been driving that day. In addition to driving under the influence, the man engaged in a situation with another vehicle that led to road-rage and a fatal collision with an innocent biker. And if those two factors alone weren't enough, the driver fled the scene of the crash, potentially delaying any chance the victim would have had to receive medical care or to speak with police, as he was required to do by law.

Van Driver in Illinois Crash that Killed 5 Had Suspended License

The driver of a van that was involved in a bad rollover crash last week in southern Illinois was driving on a suspended license, according to the Associated Press.

Though the Illinois State Police Department has not identified the driver, the Associated Press obtained the citation issued as a result of the crash which did list the driver's name. From there, it could determine the driver, a resident of New Jersey, had his license suspended last year for insurance-related issues after failing to make three mandatory payments to a New Jersey court. His license was also suspended briefly in 2002 for falling behind on child support.

The crash occurred in Vandalia, Illinois on I-70. Some reports indicate that the van was on the highway while others have stated that the van was on a highway ramp but it is clear that the driver lost control of the vehicle which flipped and rolled over several times. Eleven people were in the van at the time and nine of them were ejected as the van rolled. Five of the passengers died.

The van was reportedly traveling from California back to New Jersey after a week-long ministry gathering out west when the Illinois crash occurred. The names of all the victims have not yet been released but it has been learned that the driver as well as at least one of the passengers had criminal pasts, including incarceration, for crimes unrelated to this incident.

The victims are believed to have been members of Victory Outreach International, a religious group that attempts to help people take control of their lives as well as reaching out to at-risk groups. With over 700 churches world-wide, Victory Outreach is also known for providing drug and alcohol rehabilitation services to those in need.

Though the driver in this accident was cited for improper lane usage and driving on a suspended license, it is possible that he could be charged with additional traffic and possibly criminal offenses once the cause of the crash is determined.

Taxi Cab Driver Killed, Passenger Injured in Mission Valley Accident

A 36-year-old taxi cab driver, not wearing a seat belt, was killed in a single vehicle crash that took place on December 15 around 6:04 a.m. at northbound state Route 163. According to California Highway Patrol Officers, the cab driver was speeding on the rain soaked curve when he lost control of the vehicle.

The cab went off the right side of the pathway and struck a concrete wall on its passenger side. The motorist suffered a vehicle ejection, suffered a fatal head injury, and was pronounced dead. We send our condolences to the deceased victim’s family members for such a devastating loss.

Bartlett Man Killed In Motorcycle Accident

A Wednesday morning motorcycle crash claimed the life of a 24-year-old Bartlett man, according to local authorities. The accident happened near the 600 block of West Lake Street in Bartlett shortly after 10:00 a.m. though it is not clear if any other vehicles were involved.

The driver survived the initial crash and was transported to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates for emergency medical treatment but unfortunately the man did not survive.

Woman Killed After Man Leaves Car Running, Son Accidentally Puts it in Gear

Authorities believe a 58-year-old woman was in the wrong place at the wrong time when she was killed on a Thursday morning. The woman was walking on a sidewalk in the 4400 block of South Saint Louis Avenue in the Brightton Park neighborhood when a truck crashed through a garage and struck her.

Police say that a pickup truck was loaded with construction materials or metal scraps as it sat in an alley. The driver exited the truck with the truck in park to pick up something from the alley. Witnesses state that the driver's son, a 13-year-old boy, was in the truck and accidentally put the truck in gear as he sat in the front passenger seat. The truck began to roll forward, prompting the 13-year-old to climb into the driver's seat and attempt to stop the truck. Though he attempted to use the brake pedal, the teen hit the gas instead, sending the truck flying into a garage. The truck crashed through the garage and struck the woman on the other side.

The truck crossed the street and then hit another garage before colliding with a brick wall, where it came to a rest. Authorities were called and emergency medical personnel transported the victim to Mt. Sinai Hospital where she underwent treatment for several hours before dying of her injuries in the early afternoon.

The driver of the car received citations for leaving a vehicle unattended while running and for driving on a suspended or revoked license. At this point, there is no indication that the teen will face any charges but authorities state that they are still investigating the incident.

Accidents can happen to anyone on any given day. But describing incidents like this one as accidents is not absolutely accurate in many cases. Here, there is no indication that either the man or his son intended to hurt anyone, including the female victim, but that is exactly what happened. Though the driver may have not had ill will towards the woman, by leaving his truck running in an alley and by letting his unlicensed son to remain in the truck where the son could operate the vehicle, the driver risked the safety of others in the area. Additionally, the driver at issue did not have a valid license at the time of the crash and therefore could not legally drive, yet he chose to drive anyway. Even after the state of Illinois determined that he was not legally allowed to drive, the man determined that he could get behind the wheel and drive anyway. His actions created a dangerous situation that cost an innocent woman her life.

Motorist Killed After Vehicle Hits Fallbrook Building

A 60-year-old man was killed in a single vehicle wreck that occurred on January 3 around 6:14 p.m. near Alturas Road on West Fallbrook Street. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the vehicle ran into the wall of an apartment building.

Pedestrian Killed Next to Disabled Car Near O'Hare Airport

Last month a man was killed as he was walking in the early morning near a disabled car at the Far Northwest Side near O’Hare Airport. The accident happened at approximately 1:35 in the morning on Saturday March 23, in the 5800 block of North Mannheim Road. Police believe that the young woman driving a PT Cruiser south on Mannheim may have been cut off by another vehicle suddenly, causing her to swerve the vehicle from left to right in order to prevent a collision. In doing so she struck a pedestrian and a parked Volvo which was disabled.

According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, the victim of the crash, who remained unidentified by midday, was believed to be in his 40s and died shortly after the accident. Police believe he may have been the owner of the Volvo. The woman remained on the scene and was cooperative with police questioning.

The data regarding accidents occurring off of the roadway, such as this one, may surprise you. The startling numbers from 2009, for example, can be found on page 51, table 28 of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's publication entitled (NHTSA) Traffic Safety Facts 2009.

According to the document, the number of fatal accidents within the categories of "off of roadway" and "on the shoulder," almost equal the amount of those that occur on the roadway: 2,497 (shoulder) + 10,114 (off roadway) compared with 16,906 (on roadway). Out of a total of 30,797 fatal crashes total, this means that accidents off the roadway and on the shoulder account for over 40% of fatal crashes overall.

Man Killed in Fatal Corona Auto Accident

An 18-year old Anaheim man was killed in a serious car wreck that occurred on September 24, 2011, around 2:40 a.m. on Highway 91 (US-91) in Corona. According to the Riverside County Coroner's office, the victim’s vehicle struck a guard rail, rolled over, and then struck the concrete pillar of an overpass.

Moreno Valley Motorist Killed in Highway 60 Auto Accident

49-year-old Jose Guadalupe Torres died in a serious truck crash that occurred on August 21, 2011, around 12:46 a.m. on the eastbound 60 (US-60) just west of Day Street in Moreno Valley. According to Riverside County coroner, the motorist lost control of his pick up and veered off the road.

The man was immediately transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center for treatment, where he was later pronounced dead.

Pedestrian killed, 2 others injured in Chicago taxicab accident

An Illinois taxi vs. pedestrian collision has left one person dead and two others injured when a cab driver lost control on the morning of June 27, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The incident occurred just before 8:50 AM in the 300 block of E. Illinois Street.

The cab driver reportedly lost control, fatally striking a pedestrian and crashing into a parking garage. The taxi driver and his passenger were both injured when the vehicle hit the garage in the Streeterville neighborhood. Witnesses and police are stating that the passenger was female and she had to be cut out of the backseat. As Chicago fire department personnel worked to extricate her from the vehicle, the male pedestrian's body was laying in the street under a sheet.

The two injured people were taken by ambulance to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious to critical condition.

The accident was picked up on surveillance video from a nearby business. The pedestrian victim is shown walking eastbound on Illinois. The taxicab then skids off the road towards the pedestrian and the garage, and then the victim disappears from view.

A 23-year-old Chicago Tribune employee was at scene the to witness the crash. He stated he saw a Checker cab going fast on Illinois Street. The taxi then may have been cut off by another, swerved and hit the pedestrian on the sidewalk on the north side of the street.

NBC news is reporting that the cab driver is 71 years old and does not have a great driving record. He has received more than 30 traffic tickets between 1988 and 2010. The moving violations include failing to obey red lights, stop sign violations, speeding, obstructing traffic and improperly changing lanes.

The victim, a man in his 50s, was a dishwasher at Navy Pier seafood store and a resident of Rogers Park.

The Chicago Police Department handled the crash investigation. They issued citations to the cab driver for driving too fast for conditions and failing to show due care to a pedestrian.

This same intersection is the location where a fatal tour bus vs. pedestrian accident took place in May. The bus was turning and struck a pedestrian in the crosswalk. The driver was later charged with DUI.

The summertime can be dangerous for pedestrians in downtown Chicago. Just days after the June 27 accident, more pedestrians were injured on July 1 on Michigan Avenue, according to the Tribune.

Two pedestrians were hit in the crosswalk by a driver headed in the wrong direction. The collision took place around 5:15 PM in the 200 block of N. Michigan Ave.

The woman was reportedly in her 80s and was driving southbound in the northbound lanes. The pedestrians hit were a 35-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman. After the collision with the pedestrians, the motorist struck a northbound vehicle, and the northbound vehicle was then knocked into a third vehicle.

The pedestrians were taken by Chicago Fire Department ambulance to Northwestern Hospital. One of the injured was in serious to critical condition. The 80-year-old motorist was also taken to Northwestern, but her injuries were not reported.

Pedestrian Killed in Horrid Lemon Grove Car Accident

A 75-year-old La Mesa man was struck and killed in dreadful Lemon Grove pedestrian collision that occurred on July 1, 2011, around 2:07 a.m. near Spring Street on State Route 125 (SR-125). According to responding California Highway Patrol officers, 46-year-old Harold Bryan Mittleman was driving a Hyundai Accent compact car when he struck the pedestrian near the Spring Street exit. The impact of the collision was so strong that the victim’s legs were severed and to the horror of Mittleman, his torso landed in the passenger area crashing through the windscreen.

Mittleman was in a state of shock and kept driving towards home. He reached home and called 911. Now the investigating officers need to determine what made Mittleman hit the pedestrian. Though it may technically be considered a hit-and-run, due to the nature of the accident, authorities will not be seeking charges against him.

25 year-old Woman Killed on Kansas City Highway

This is a scary thing to face as a Kansas City motorist.  It’s early, still dark and you’re heading home or maybe to work on a busy highway, when you see someone stumbling along the highway on foot– but in a shocking development, that’t sadly what early morning commuters were faced with a few days ago on their way to work.

A 15 year-old girl was killed in a tragic rollover car accident on Interstate 35 near Antioch Road in Overland Park, Kansas. Nurse Struck and Killed After Helping Stranded Motorists in Illinois Car Accident

Last month a nurse was struck by a passing vehicle as she was helping a motorist who had driven into a ditch. This Illinois car accident happened along U.S. 51 in Jackson County, between Carbondale and DeSoto and killed the nurse.

Authorities are still investigating the scene, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Teenager Killed In Mojave Desert Car Accident on I-15 North

19-year-old Bianca Mathew was killed in a freeway car accident that occurred on May 20, 2011, around 1:10 a.m. deep in the Mojave Desert. Moreno Valley Woman Killed In Riverside Auto Accident

An unidentified 53-year-old Moreno Valley woman was killed in a solo vehicle auto accident that occurred on April 30, 2011, around 7:50 p.m. in the 4600 block of Olivewood Avenue in Riverside. According to the California Highway Patrol Officers responding to the car crash scene, the car in which the victim was driving crashed into a tree for unknown reasons.

The injured woman was immediately transported to Riverside Community Hospital for treatment where she was ultimately pronounced dead about two hours later. The investigating officers are trying to determine the exact cause of this auto accident.

The investigation is still being conducted. Unfortunately, it is unclear from the facts of the news story why the accident occurred. Man Killed And 10-Year Old Boy Injured In Bakersfield DUI Car Accident

Oscar Cecilio Rodas, 58, was killed and a 10-year-old boy suffered injuries in a serious Kern County car accident that occurred on May 1, 2011, at 6:10 a.m. on Wilson Road and South H Street in Bakersfield. According to the responding California Highway Patrol Officers, Rodas was travelling westbound in his Toyota Camry and entered the intersection when his vehicle was broadsided by a blue Nissan Sentra being driven northbound by Curtis Peery, 34.

Rodas suffered major injuries and was immediately transported by the paramedics to Kern Medical Center for treatment, where he was pronounced dead around 6:48 a.m. A 10-year-old boy who was a passenger in the Toyota suffered minor injuries and was also transported to Kern Medical Center.

According to the information provided by Bakersfield Police Department, Peery was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.

If Peery is determined to have been at fault for causing the motor vehicle accident, then he could face not only criminal charges for driving under influence, but could also be held financially responsible for the injuries and damages caused. Peery will most likely be found to have violated California Vehicle Code Section 23152(a) which states that “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.” Rodas’s family could seek compensation to pay for the funeral and burial costs, loss of anticipated earnings, loss of love and companionship, and other accident related expenses.

In addition, the injured boy can obtain compensation to compensate him for his medical expenses, cost of hospitalization, physical therapy, and other related damages.
