Illinois Senate Votes to Increase Highway Speed Limit to 70

Friday, July 12, 2013
0 comments

The Illinois Senate voted to increase the state maximum speed to 70 miles per hour on highways, a 5 mile per hour increase over the state's current limit of 65 mph. The bill has some flexibility and would allow Cook County, some collar counties, and two counties near St. Louis to opt out of the increase if officials determined it would be proper to do so.

Sponsored by Senator Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, the bill has been touted as being business-friendly by allowing commerce to move at a quicker pace. The bill passed easily in the Senate with a 41-6 vote and now moves onto the House. If the bill becomes law, the speed increase would take effect January 1, 2014.

Faster speed limits allow all drivers to get to their destinations quicker than they would in a slower speed zone. But fast transit time is not the only thing to be concerned of when considering highway speeds. Studies have routinely found that higher highway speeds are correlated with greater numbers of fatal accidents in the State, which in turn costs the state millions of dollars each year.

In 2009, car accidents caused by speeding on interstates resulted in 51 fatalities in Illinois alone. Of those fatalities, 41 took place in areas with a speed limit in excess of 55 miles per hour. This is because as vehicles travel at higher rates of speed, the force of a collision likewise increases, causing the vehicles involved to suffer greater damage and more serious injuries than they would in a crash with slower speeds.

Increased speeds also cause drivers to have slower reaction times, a critical tool when it comes to defensive driving and avoiding dangerous situations. With less time to react to danger, a crash is more likely to occur.

As car crash lawyers, we handle cases every day where one driver caused a collision by driving faster than necessary. Many of these collisions could be eliminated or at least reduced in severity if drivers slowed down and paid attention to their surroundings. While an increased speed limit may appear to have some benefits, it certainly has some negatives that should be considered before new law is enacted.

49-year-old Jose Guadalupe Torres died in a serious truck crash that occurred on August 21, 2011, around 12:46 a.m. on the eastbound 60 (US-60) just west of Day Street in Moreno Valley. According to Riverside County coroner, the motorist lost control of his pick up and veered off the road.

The man was immediately transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center for treatment, where he was later pronounced dead.

There are no details about the cause of the auto accident. If the loss of control was due to uneven road or a mechanical failure, Torres’s family may be entitled for compensation. These types of claims are factually specific and require an immediate and detailed investigation be performed by trained experts managed by a skilled personal injury lawyer. Any delay in the investigation may result in the loss of key pieces of evidence. However, regardless of whether the accident is the fault of anyone else, our prayers go out to his family for their loss.

Torres’s family members should immediately seek counsel from an experienced Riverside County truck accident lawyer who would educate them about their legal rights and help them obtain a fair and timely compensation.

We know that traffic can be frustrating.  Sometimes an injury accident can hold up traffic on a major highway for several hours and that is always the last thing you need when you’re starting your day.  The important thing to remember when these traffic conditions present themselves is to continue to drive patient.  At Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys, we’ve seen this before.  A traffic delay becomes frustrating and that leads to someone trying to cut corners and make up for lost time– often times leading to another injury accident– which only makes matters worse.

Two motor vehicle accidents happened on 69 Highway in Overland Park, KS. creating a lengthy traffic delay.

The perfect example of this happened the other day when two Kansas City Auto Accidents happened within an hour of each other on U.S. 69 Highway in Overland Park and shut down the highway for a few hours.  The first auto injury accident happened around 8:12 p.m. when two vehicles collided on northbound 69 Highway at Blue Valley Parkway– then,

the second accident happened around 9:30 near 69 Highway northbound at 135th Street when a pickup truck was attempting to avoid hitting a stopped vehicle and was rear ended by a second police truck.

Between both accidents there were eight overall injuries. All were hospitalized but none are expected to be life threatening.

23-year-old La Quinta resident Bryan Sargent was killed in a La Quinta car accident that occurred on May 29, 2011, around 10:23 a.m. along Rancho Mirage Highway. According to Riverside County Coroner's officials, Sargent’s vehicle drifted into oncoming traffic along the Highway 111 (SR-111) and collided with an SUV.

Sargent was immediately transported to Eisenhower Medical Center for treatment where he was pronounced dead around 11:12 a.m. From the limited information, it is not clear what made Sargent drift his vehicle into the incoming traffic. An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the accident.

Loss of a young family member is a heart-wrenching and irreversible loss. Though it is a tough time for Sargent’s family, it would be in their best interest to immediately consult with a Riverside County car accident lawyer to know about their legal rights and options. A traffic injury attorney will help Sargent’s family obtain fair compensation to cover funeral and burial costs, loss of anticipated income, loss of love and companionship, and other accident-related expenses.

Our law office offers sincere condolences to all those who knew and loved Sargent for such a tragic loss.

Police Believe Marijuana May Have Been Factor in Fatal Crossover Crash on Kansas Highway 10

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

There are many factors that can cause a fatal crossover accident on the highway.  Among them is of course distracted driving– but some of the most dangerous factors are alcohol and prescription or illegal drugs.  At Roswold Law Group, we have discussed in great length the dangers of drunk driving, but marijuana can be just as dangerous.  It may not get as much attention as driving under the influence of alcohol, but marijuana use can lull a driver into a zone and cause them to lose focus on the road.

Members of the Kansas Highway Patrol are investigating a fatal crossover crash that happened on Kansas Highway 10 on Saturday.  Two people were killed in the fatal accident including a five year-old child.  The KHP says a 24 year-old man driving a Toyota Camry crossed over the median and hit a Dodge van carrying four passengers, all of whom suffered serious injuries and were hospitalized.  The crash killed the driver of the Toyota and a five yr-old in the van.  Two adults and a 23 month-old child were taken to the hospital.

A preliminary autopsy has revealed the 24 year-old driver tested positive for marijuana use and it has yet to be determined if it was a factor in the crash.  The victim was the only one involved in the crash who was not wearing his seat belts.

Our experienced Kansas City Auto Injury Attorneys encourage all motorists to practice safe and attentive driving techniques to ensure that all roads and highways are safe in the future.  The highways are dangerous enough as it is.  These accidents that happen on our state highways can have especially dangerous consequences because of the high speeds cars and trucks are traveling at.  Adding other factors that could affect your judgment, such as alcohol or illegal drugs, to the equation raises the stakes and puts everyone on the highway in danger.

If you or someone you love has been injured in an automobile accident in Kansas or Missouri, you may be entitled to compensation including medical bills, loss of wages and legal fees.  Call the experienced experienced Kansas City Personal Injury Lawyers of Roswold Law Group.  With over 15 years of experience in Auto Injury Accident cases including cases involving driving under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs, we may be able to help you get through this difficult and stressful time.
