Deadly Illinois Bus Accident Kills One, Injures 37

Friday, June 28, 2013
0 comments

There was a terrible bus accident this morning in the north suburbs of Chicago. Early reports indicate that the driver of a school bus ran a red light and collided with two SUVs near Wadsworth. The driver of one of those SUVs was killed in the collision, according to the Chicago Tribune.

A Lake County Sheriff described the collision as nearly a t-bone with all vehicles suffering significant damage. The SUV of the person killed was destroyed from the rear seat forward and the bus fell over and landed on its side, shattering several windows.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Highway 173 and Kilbourne Road in Newport Township with the bus reportedly was on its way to Newport Elementary School to drop off students for the day.

Children from the bus were examined at the scene and placed either on another bus with paramedics or in ambulances to be transported to hospitals. Two passengers in an SUV and 35 students from the bus were injured and examined. The driver of the bus did not appear to sustain any serious injuries but was shaken and upset at the scene.

Most of the children, believed to be in grades kindergarten through fifth, appeared to suffer minor injuries including bumps and bruises. However there were fractured hands, head injuries, and other broken bones. Some of the students were distraught at the scene and crying for their parents.

At least one eye witness stated that the bus driver ran a red light. Area residents said the light was just installed last year and that its presence had made some of the neighbors feel safer.

Unfortunately school buses are often involved in collisions and cause injuries to thousands of children every year. In 2008, 123 school-aged children were injured in school bus collisions in Illinois alone with another 71 non school-aged passengers injured as well. Since most children do not wear seat belts on school buses, they have a high risk of serious injury, especially when a bus rolls over as it did in this case.

It can be particularly scary to have a child involved in a school bus accident because parents entrust the safety of their children to bus drivers. Most parents believe that a school bus and their drivers are safe and will put the safety of the children first. However that does not always happen.

Bus drivers, like any other driver, can be guilty of driving negligently. Bus drivers can run red lights, speed, follow too closely, and get distracted just like other negligent drivers. However the risks associated with negligence are much higher for bus drivers because they are often responsible the safety of dozens of children at any given time.

Single Vehicle Accident in Unincorporated Stickney Kills Pregnant Woman and Unborn Child

Friday, June 7, 2013

A single vehicle crash that occurred recently in unicorporated Stickney has left a 24-year-old woman and the unborn child she was carrying dead, it is being reported.

According to a spokesman for the Cook County Sheriff's department, the accident occurred on the 4900 block of South Central Avenue at approximately 7:40 in the evening, on March 22. The woman was travelling northbound on Central Avenue in her Pontiac G6 when she hit a mailbox on the northeast side of the street, which caused her vehicle to spin around and hit a metal pole located on the same corner.

The woman and her unborn child were pronounced dead at about 8:30 p.m. at Loyola University Medical Center, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Officials said that an accident reconstruction team is investigating the crash, and that no one else was in the vehicle.

Tragically, fatal one car accidents such as this one occur much too frequently within the greater Chicago area. The causes of these single vehicle collisions can include anything from a malfunctioning motor vehicle, unexpected obstructions in the roadway, inclement weather conditions, and even over-correcting one's vehicle in order to avoid another crash. Additionally, a distracted driver or otherwise impaired motorist can also be the cause of these types of accidents.

For example, in 2011 alone, across the State of Illinois, more than half of the 918 fatal traffic collisions involved only one motor vehicle. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration suggests that a large proportion of those one-car traffic accidents occur in larger urban areas like Chicago.

If you were injured in a car accident, you should contact a car accident lawyer in order to discuss your rights and remedies. You might be able to recover damages from the negligent motorist related to the cost of your medical care, which can include medical bills, physical therapy, and lost wages from work, as well as for any resulting disability. Additionally recoverable expenses can include things such as pain and suffering, funeral expenses, and more.

Off Duty Police Officer Kills 2 College Students in Chicago DUI Wrong Way Crash

Sunday, May 5, 2013
0 comments

Last month, two college students were killed tragically when their car collided head on with a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction. The two young men were traveling southbound on Lake Shore Drive at around 4 in the morning on March 15 when an off duty police officer's Chevy Trailblazer slammed into their black Jeep. The officer, Terrell Garrett, was allegedly severely intoxicated, which could explain why he was driving on the wrong side of the road at the time of the collision.

According to statements made by prosecutors at the March 18 hearing, Garrett allegedly had a blood alcohol content of 0.184 at the time he was apprehended, which is more than double the legal limit. He was reportedly celebrating his birthday the day when the accident occurred. He faces two felony counts of reckless homicide and two felony counts of aggravated driving under the influence, the judge set his bail at $500,000.

The North Chicago Police Department released a statement that they, “immediately relieved Officer Terrell Garrett of his police powers and has placed him on administrative leave pending the outcome of the Chicago Police Department’s investigation.”

According to state records, approximately 50,000 drivers are taken into custody for driving under the influence of either alcohol or drugs in Illinois annually. Nearly 80 percent of these drivers are first-time DUI offenders. However, as this tragic case demonstrates, even the first time driving under the influence can result in catastrophic injuries or death. Additionally, it is important to note that the charges relating to DUI are handled through the criminal process. In many cases, victims of these tragic crashes may be able to make additional civil claims against the drunk driver.

If you or a loved one has been hurt in a car accident that was caused by an impaired driver, you may have a claim against the driver who caused the accident. You could potentially recover financial compensation for your medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and benefits, any resulting disability, and a variety of other damages. Additionally, if you lost a family member to an accident that was caused by an impaired driver, you may be eligible to bring a wrongful death action. An experienced Chicago car accident attorney can discuss your potential claims with you in order to determine your best course of action.

If you were injured or a close relative was killed in a DUI or other traffic accident in Chicago, the experienced and diligent attorneys at Abels & Annes, P.C. are available 24 hours per day, seven days a week to answer your questions and help you file your personal injury or wrongful death claim. 65-year-old Edward Dodson III of Yucaipa died in a Beaumont traffic accident that occurred on August 16, 2011, around 9:30 p.m. along Interstate 10 (I-10) in Beaumont. According to the California Highway Patrol, Dodson slammed his pickup truck into the rear side of a big-rig trailer near roadwork along the eastbound lanes. The impact of the collision was so strong that the pickup went underneath the big-rig trailer. Dodson suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the accident scene. Officer Darren Meyer said that Caltrans contractors were doing road construction in the area where this accident occurred and traffic was slowing to a crawl.

From the available information, it is unclear what made Dodson rear-end the big-rig trailer. There is a possibility that the accident may have been the result of an uneven road surface or an improper road marking to show construction in progress. Regardless of the facts, the victims’ families should consult with a Riverside County personal injury attorney who can hire a trained private investigator to find out how the accident occurred and to determine if there are any facts which would suggest that the accident was the cause of someone else’s negligence.

The victim’s family can file a wrongful death claim to obtain compensation to cover funeral and burial costs, loss of love, care and companionship, and other accident-related damages.

Our law office offers sincere condolences to all those who knew and loved Dodson for such a heart rendering loss.

43-year-old Chino Hills resident Serlander Faye Webb was struck and killed by a Jeep on June 1, 2011, around 8:58 a.m. near Chino Hills Parkway and Falling Star Lane. According to San Bernardino County Sheriff's Officials, Webb was crossing the street when she was struck by a Jeep driven by 29-year-old Angelina Muldown.

There is limited information on the sequence of events that led to this accident. An investigation will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the accident. Investigating officers need to determine whether Muldown was speeding, distracted, driving under the influence of drugs, or inattentive. If it is found during the initial investigation that Muldown’s reckless and negligent driving lead to this accident, then she may be held liable for Webb’s wrongful death.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the deceased pedestrian. Under California Vehicle Code Section 21950(a), “The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection….”

Webb’s family members should advise a San Bernardino pedestrian accident lawyer. A pedestrian injury attorney will make it easy for deceased’s family members to obtain compensation to cover funeral and burial expenses, loss of anticipated earnings, loss of love, and companionship and other accident-related expenses.

Our law office offers sincere condolences to all those who knew and loved Webb for such a tragic loss.

A Sparta man was killed in a recent North Carolina truck crash on NC 88. Police say that the truck driver, Richard Stroud struck a 2003 Chevrolet pickup in a head-on collision after losing control of his 2005 Kenworth tractor-trailer. Richard Dean Fender, who was driving the pickup, ended up pinned to his auto. It took several hours to move the semi-truck. Trucker Richard Stroud is charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.

North Carolina Truck Accident Cases
Even if the trucker that caused your North Carolina truck crash is charged over the collision, you will still need an experienced personal injury law firm that handles truck accident cases to prove negligence should you decide to sue the truck driver and his/her company for damages.

Because there may be more than one responsible party involved, the sooner an investigation is conducted on your behalf, the better. There is likely physical evidence at the crash site that can help your case and should be collected immediately. Police reports will have to be studied, forensic tests may be required, and witness accounts must be gathered while they are still fresh.

Truck crash cases are more complex than North Carolina car accident lawsuits. You may think that you are saving money by choosing not to hire a North Carolina injury law firm. In reality, your chances of recovering the maximum compensation goes up when you are represented by experienced legal professionals. Also, you will only have to pay your North Carolina tractor-trailer accident attorneys if you recover and the money will come from your financial compensation.

As reported by Fox news:

A woman was struck and killed early Thursday morning by a pickup truck that was jacked up so high, the driver says he never saw his victim.

The accident happened around 2:15 a.m. in the parking lot of Spearmint Rhino Gentleman's Club on Composite Drive near Walnut Hill in Dallas.

Police say 27-year-old Eric Crutchfield got into his silver four-door Ford F-250 truck and slowly began to pull forward out of his parking space.

Witnesses say the victim, 23-year-old Kasey McKenzie of Granbury, was walking through the parking lot and had just stepped in front of Crutchfield's truck as he put it in gear.

According to the police report, two of the Ford's giant tires, which appear to be at least three feet tall, rolled over McKenzie. However, Crutchfield told police he didn't realize anything had happened until other people stopped him in the parking lot.

Officers booked Crutchfield on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, and discovered he has a suspended license.

McKenzie's Facebook page says she is a 2006 graduate of Granbury High School and a 2010 graduate of University of North Texas.

Friends and family members say she was not an employee of the club.
